Abstract

Discusses special considerations when installing ScriptServer® PAN Printing System (PAN) on Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Microsoft Windows 2003 Server.

(As Always) We Recommend Reading and Following the Installation Guide

The INSTALL.PAN file contains detailed step-by-step installation instructions for both Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and Microsoft Windows 2003 Server.

We assume you can configure Internet Information Server (IIS) so that it will serve an "under construction" page for the default web site without our assistance, however there are certain steps which will be required to configure IIS to properly serve the PAN interface.

Items Requiring Particular Attention

The following table summarizes the key points when configuring the installation:

Windows 2000 Server Windows 2003 Server

Web Service Extensions

Unknown CGI Extensions must be allowed

Virtual Directory path

This will be installation-path/public_html

Virtual Directory access permissions

Must be able to execute ISAPI/CGI applications

download directory not executable

The installation-path/public_html/download directory contains components (including executables) which are intended to be downloadable, and not to be executed on the server. This directory needs to be set to have Execute Permissions of None.

Default Document is index.html

PAN uses index.html as its default document. You must make sure that IIS serves this file as the default document or you will receive Access Forbidden errors when attempting to contact the PAN installation virtual directory.

Anonymous User must be the PAN installation account

When you run the PAN installer, you will need to supply the name of an account (which does not already exist), and which will be automatically created and under which PAN will install itself. This account must be set as the anonymous user for the virtual directory.

PAN account must have Log On as Service right

The PAN account must have the Log On as Service right..

IIS_WPG special rights

The IIS_WPG group needs the rights Adjust memory quotas for a process and Impersonate a client after authentication

PAN installation account password should never expire

This is not mentioned in the Installation Guide, but most installations should probably verify the settings for the PAN installation account include that the password never expires. The PAN installer may leave this checkbox unset... and therefore the PAN will stop working (rather mysteriously) after the password expires (Microsoft typically uses 42 days as a default).
