XENTIS™ Key Installation Instructions

Abstract

Informal discussion of the process of installing a XENTIS™ license key.

Discussion

NOTE: Appendix H of the Reference Manual has complete installation instructions, including instructions for installation of the product key.

There are two utilities installed with XENTIS that are used to install or test a XENTIS Product Key. Both are located in the [productversion.DATA] directory.

Testing an Existing Key

To test an existing (installed) XENTIS key, use PKTEST.EXE. No changes will be made to the key, and if a key does not exist this program causes no damage to your system.

  1. From the [productversion.DATA] directory, enter:

    RUN PKTEST

    (and press enter)

  2. When prompted for the Product Name, enter:

    XENTIS

    (and press enter)

  3. Exit the program by just pressing enter at the prompt which asks you to supply a "Y" to test product name.

If a key exists the details (Company Name, Node Name, Product Name, Distributor Name, etc.) will appear. Sometimes, when the question of which modules are licensed arises, we use this program to get the key serial number which we can then use to find additional information in the GrayMatter key database.

If a XENTIS key exists on this node, PKTEST will find it. A version 4 license key (a product name of XENTIS) will work with all version 4 point releases of XENTIS unless you are changing hardware, nodes or modules.

Installing a New Key

To install a new key, PKMS_LOAD.COM is used. Before you run PKMS_LOAD.COM, you will need the information provided on your GrayMatter product key.

If the key information was sent to you electronically (by e-mail), it is stringly recommended that you format the text in a font such as Courier which accentuates the differences between lowercase l (ell) and uppercase I (eye), and between an uppercase O (oh) and numeric 0 (zero). Entry of key information is very case and space sensitive. It must be typed exactly as supplied. If you have difficulties loading the key, contact the Sales Department at GrayMatter Software (206) 329-8800 and have the key resent or recut. There is no way to change the key over the phone, etc. A new key must be cut and sent (e-mail is fairly fast); any other attempts to change information will fail to complete installation of the key.

PKMS_LOAD will prompt you for information working down the GrayMatter Key page. Not all information on the page will be requested; it is amazing the number of calls Tech Support gets because the users were not asked to supply some of these valuable answers to the system...

To run PKMS_LOAD, SET DEFAULT to the [productversion.DATA] directory, and start the procedure with

@ PKMS_LOAD.COM

The prompts take you through much of the same material as would be entered were you to load the license key during installation of XENTIS: Distributor, Authorization Code, Product Name ("XENTIS"), Company Name, etc.

The PKMS_LOAD process departs from the installation routine when it gets to the input of the Module information. PKMS_LOAD does not need this information as it is encoded within the Checksum information that will be entered.

During entry of the Checksums (A through E) be very careful to match the character and case of each value, especially I/i and L/l, O/o and 0. It is because of the juxtaposition of these characters that most key code entry fails.

When you have finished entry of the Checksums, the process will prompt

Is this License Key correct [Y]

If you see no mistakes, press enter and continue to the key test; if you see a mistake, enter N and press enter: PKMS_LOAD will then run back through the data entry prompts.

PKMS_LOAD will do the calculations to validate the checksums based on the data entered. If the checksum calculations fail and you get a PKMS error reporting an invalid checksum or invalid key, it is invariably a checksum/data entry error. Format that e-mail with Courier and try again.

A PKMS-E-INVNODE - Software not licensed for use on this node error denotes an incorrectly cut key or a key cut correctly based on incorrect CPU/Model/Node/SID or other node-specific information. Make sure that you've entered this information correctly as prompted. If all looks correct, visit the Key Request Form page at the GrayMatter web site and run the provided inquiry commands again to confirm that the information which was supplied to cut the key is correct. If this information has changed, you will need to have a new key cut. Contact sales@graysoft.com to get a new key (or go ahead and fill out the Key Request Form again, and supply an appropriate comment in the space provided).

When the key installation information has all been tested, PKMS_LOAD.COM will ask if you want to write the key to your system. An affirmative answer will cause the logical PKMS$XENTIS to be created, loaded with the key information you supplied.

Next, PKMS_LOAD will ask permission to create the file PKMS_XENTIS_START.COM into which the key information is inserted such that when your system is rebooted, the PKMS$XENTIS key logical name will be recreated.

XENTIS™ Keys not the same as ScriptServer® Keys

If you also have the GrayMatter Software Corporation product ScriptServer for OpenVMS, do not try to use the PKMS_LOAD.COM that is packaged with the ScriptServer product distribution. They work alike but create different keys from different input data and the ScriptServer version will not write a XENTIS key and vice versa.
