XENTIS/DICTIONARY

Overview

XENTIS/Dictionary is a complete data dictionary management tool. With it, you can create and maintain centralized data definitions that provide easy access to RMS data files with XENTIS,

XENTIS/Dictionary supports over 40 data types, allowing easy integration with applications written in COBOL, FORTRAN, C, BASIC, DIBOL, PL/l, PASCAL, and other languages.

XENTIS/Dictionary simplifies a normally complicated task, yet still provides the security you need.

Simple

Dictionary Maintenance: You can quickly add, change, display or delete information in your dictionary. Modifications can range from editing an existing data element to adding complete file definitions. Dictionaries are easily maintained using formatted data entry screens and "filling in the blanks." The dictionary is so easy to use that a new, keyed file can be added in less than five minutes. In addition, XENTIS/Dictionary provides advanced features that decrease the time and knowledge required to develop reports using XENTIS/Report.

Views: XENTIS/Dictionary allows you to create pre-defined file relationships, or views. Once defined, both primary and secondary files are automatically accessed by selecting a view as input to your report. You no longer have to define keys to merge related files. Reporting from many files is as simple as reporting from a single file.

Custom Headings: XENTIS/Dictionary allows you to define multi-line headings and customized print formats for each data element. Both your column titles and data formats will suit your needs.

Text Import/Export: If you wish to make wholesale changes to dictionary information, dictionaries can be copied from XENTIS/Dictionary to a text file, then edit the text file with a text editor to simplify wholesale changes. You can also create a XENTIS/Dictionary file or view definition from a text file. The text file can be a previously copied XENTIS definition, or from any application program you choose. Conversions from existing systems can be greatly simplified using this feature.

Copy a File or View Description: You can easily clone existing file and view definitions to serve as your starting point when creating new definitions. You may copy within a dictionary or from one dictionary to another.

Transfer from CDD Plus: XENTIS/Dictionary can easily create new file definitions by copying existing definitions from your DEC Common Data Dictionary (CDD or CDD/Plus) to XENTIS.

Create a New Empty Data File: You can provide initial disk allocation and create new, empty files using XENTIS/Dictionary. In just seconds you will be ready populate the new file with data using XENTIS tools or other programs and applications.

Secure

Data Access: Each element within your data base can be independently secured. You can control access to entire files or views, or to individual fields within a file.

Record Selection: Views within XENTIS/Dictionary may also provide record selection logic that will limit the data that is reportable. Even when data for all departments is in a single file (as with most payroll systems), you can selectively restrict departments from accessing the data of other departments, thereby preserving your sensitive information.

Multiple Dictionaries: You can create separate dictionaries for individuals, departments or applications. XENTIS allows you to reference multiple dictionaries within a single report. Using multiple dictionaries, you can provide even greater overall security for sensitive data. Once a new dictionary has been created, you can add entirely new file definitions or copy existing definitions from other dictionaries.

Audit Trail Management: XENTIS/Dictionary can provide an audit trail to monitor all changes made to a data file using XENTIS/Edit, /File, or /Update. This audit can greatly simplify researching and resolving system problems.
